Dario Essugo’s setback deepens as Maresca sheds light on the issue and highlights a glimmer of positivity with Caicedo’s suspension.
Enzo Maresca provided further context on the midweek hiccup that sidelined Essugo. The midfielder had returned to training in the run-up to the Arsenal match, continuing his rehabilitation from the thigh surgery he underwent in September.
During his pre-match press briefing ahead of the Leeds trip, Maresca revealed that Essugo is once again out and needs to decelerate his return.
Speaking further, the head coach explained that the Portuguese youngster will not be able to fill Moises Caicedo’s role on the field while Caicedo serves his suspension.
“I don’t see it as a major setback,” Maresca commented.
“We must assess him because the issue arose just yesterday. Clearly, he won’t be available for the next three Premier League games.”
Caicedo has been delivering elite-level performances this season, so his absence will be felt in matches against Leeds, Bournemouth, and Everton.
Maresca expressed clear disappointment about missing Caicedo for three fixtures, but pointed to a potential upside: the chance for the Ecuadorian to recover away from continuous match action.
Caicedo has started in 50 of Maresca’s 51 league games so far, often battling through niggles.
“Taking a break now means he can rest a bit more since he’s playing every game, including international duty. That’s the positive side.
Next Tuesday, he’ll be back in contention for the Atalanta game, which means one match in one week, but it also offers an opportunity to recharge his knee and renew energy.”
