Get ready for a heartfelt conversation between two iconic local actors, Jeanette Aw and Yao Wenlong, as they open up about their journey in the entertainment industry and the impact of awards on their careers.
In a recent YouTube episode of JA Unscripted, hosted by Jeanette, the pair reminisced about their memorable roles in Holland V and The Little Nyonya, which left an indelible mark on audiences. But here's where it gets controversial...
Despite their stellar performances, neither actor walked away with a Star Award for their roles in The Little Nyonya. And this is the part most people miss - the emotional rollercoaster that comes with awards season.
Wenlong, with his 32 years of experience, shared his perspective on awards, viewing them as both a form of encouragement and a record of achievement. He believes awards can inspire the next generation of artistes, but also acknowledges the disappointment that comes with not winning.
"It's like a regret," he said, referring to his role as Liu Yidao in The Little Nyonya. "Yueniang and Liu Yidao are still remembered, but the absence of an award recognition leaves a slight imperfection in the memory."
Jeanette, who played the dual roles of Huang Juxiang and Yamamoto Yueniang, echoed Wenlong's sentiments. She explained how public expectations can lead to deeper disappointment when awards don't align with popular opinion.
"The louder the expectations, the deeper the disappointment," she added.
Both actors admitted to feeling disappointed when they didn't win the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor awards, respectively. However, they ultimately agreed that being remembered for their roles is more valuable than any award.
So, what do you think? Is an award a true measure of an actor's worth, or is the impact they have on audiences more important? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
