A Bold Proposal for Rugby's Future: Erasmus' Vision for the Rugby Championship
In a recent media interaction, Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus sparked an intriguing debate about the timing of the Rugby Championship. Erasmus, speaking after the announcement of the highly anticipated 2026 Greatest Rivalry tour, shared his preference for a February start date for the Rugby Championship, aligning it with the Six Nations.
"I hope this doesn't cause any issues with SA Rugby's plans," Erasmus began, "but I believe it would be a fantastic move to start the Rugby Championship in February, simultaneously with the Six Nations."
But here's where it gets controversial... Erasmus suggested that having all teams on the same schedule would be a game-changer. "It would simplify things immensely," he explained, "avoiding the situation where some countries are at their peak in November while others are flat-lining in July."
Playing the Rugby Championship in February would bring the Southern Hemisphere competition in line with Europe, a move that makes sense given South Africa's clubs already operate on a European calendar. This is due to South Africa's departure from Southern Hemisphere club competitions in 2020, which means their contracted players are already part of the European season.
Erasmus went on to say that he saw no reason why other nations couldn't adopt this February schedule, especially since it would still be summer in Australia, Argentina, and New Zealand.
"The law changes or variations would be much easier to implement across the board if all competitions started simultaneously," he argued. "In my honest opinion, I struggle to see why New Zealand, Argentina, and Australia couldn't play the Rugby Championship at the same time as the Six Nations."
And this is the part most people miss... Erasmus acknowledged that there might be some complexities he's unaware of. "I'm just putting these ideas out there," he clarified, "I'm not claiming to have all the answers."
So, what do you think? Is Erasmus onto something here? Or are there hidden challenges that could make this proposal difficult to implement? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
