Imagine stumbling upon dinosaur fossils in a place where they're practically impossible to find—like searching for a needle in a haystack, but the haystack is an entire island. That's the reality in Ireland, where dinosaur discoveries are incredibly rare. But here’s where it gets fascinating: the only two dinosaur fossils ever found in Ireland are about to go on display in Cork, giving the public a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see these ancient treasures up close. And this is the part most people miss—these fossils, unearthed over four decades ago by dedicated collector Roger Byrne, are from two entirely different dinosaur species, both discovered on the same beach in Islandmagee, County Antrim.
Starting Sunday, these 200-million-year-old relics from the Jurassic period will be showcased at the Glucksman Gallery in University College Cork (UCC). For the first time, visitors can also marvel at nearly 300 other fossils from around the world, making this exhibition a paleontological dream come true. But here’s the controversial part: Ireland’s geology is notoriously unfriendly to dinosaur discoveries. Dr. Mike Simms, curator of geology at National Museums Northern Ireland, explains that the island lacks the right type of rocks to preserve dinosaur remains. Most of the ancient rocks that could hold such fossils were eroded away long ago, or were deposited in marine environments, making these finds even more extraordinary.
Normally housed at the Ulster Museum, these fossils are being loaned to UCC for six months, offering a rare opportunity for those far from Belfast to witness history. Alongside them will be spectacular skeletal casts of iconic dinosaurs like the Megalosaurus, Scelidosaurus, and Iguanodon, as well as marine reptiles like the Ichthyosaurus and Plesiosaurus. But don’t let the grandeur of these casts overshadow the real stars—the tiny, unassuming fragments of bone that Byrne meticulously collected.
Byrne, a teacher in Carrickfergus and a passionate fossil enthusiast, discovered these bones in 1980 and 1981 on a beach near the Gobbins. What makes his find even more remarkable is his ability to spot these fossils among countless black pebbles—a skill Dr. Simms describes as exceptional. Byrne’s talent extended beyond collecting; he was also an artist who drew the bones he discovered. His collection, donated after his death, remains a testament to his dedication.
A 2020 study by Dr. Simms and researchers from the University of Portsmouth and Queen’s University Belfast confirmed the fossils’ origins. One belongs to a carnivorous dinosaur similar to Sarcosaurus, while the other is from a Scelidosaurus, a four-legged herbivore. But here’s the question that sparks debate: Could there be more fossils waiting to be found on Islandmagee’s beaches? Dr. Simms doubts it, noting that Byrne and others thoroughly searched the area. Yet, the possibility lingers, inviting speculation and future exploration.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin, who will open the Domain of the Dinosaurs exhibition, hails it as a captivating blend of science and art.
